Social inequality often starts with how we judge others. Attractiveness-based bias can play a big role in this. But what can we do to stop this unfairness? Researchers held a contest to find ways to reduce such bias in decisions, like admissions. They tested 30 different strategies across four study phases, with over 20, 000 participants. Using a method called signal detection theory, they found two interventions really worked: they cut down on both mistakes and bias in decisions. Two others just reduced one or the other.
The best strategies had a clear plan, guiding participants to focus on important factors, not just looks. Even small changes in these strategies could affect the outcome, suggesting some key elements are crucial for success. These top interventions also reduced bias in politics and helped people with hiring experience.
The study shows that stopping unfair behavior is tough. We need more investment to create effective, flexible, and large-scale strategies. This contest offers a peek into making fairer decisions, beyond just appearances.
