In the midst of a tight presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris is boosting her campaign in Wisconsin, often referred to as a key swing state. Her visit to Madison, the state capital and a vibrant college town, comes amidst new polls showing a narrow margin between the two candidates. Harris's selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate has re-energized her campaign team in the state. His labor roots and strong union background are expected to bolster support from organized labor, a crucial voting bloc in the Midwest.
Harris has received broad union backing, including the United Auto Workers endorsement. However, the Teamsters union surprisingly declined to back any presidential candidate this year, citing internal polling showing a notable preference for Trump among its rank-and-file members. Walz's presence in rural areas could help Harris chip away at Republican support.
Walz has walked a fine line with environmentalists, emphasizing his support for fighting climate change while also promoting economic development through mining. As governor, Walz has gained experience working with miners and unions, which has led to some controversy over his stance on sulfide mining in Minnesota.
Harris, meanwhile, is set to rally supporters in Milwaukee during the Democratic National Convention, highlighting the state's significance in the election. The Harris campaign boasts over 200 staffers statewide and 48 offices across Wisconsin, including those in smaller, more rural areas. Democrats are working to increase vote totals in their strongholds, such as Milwaukee, where Black and Latino voters play a significant role.
The Trump campaign is countering Harris's efforts with its own rallies and events. Trump's running mate, Senator JD Vance, has been campaigning in the state, focusing on reaching less politically engaged voters. The Trump campaign and Wisconsin GOP have over 70 staff members and 40 offices across the state, with the Republican National Committee criticizing Harris's policies as failing to address key issues such as inflation, violence, and economic struggles in Wisconsin.
