Finding Happiness in the Unfamiliar
A 65-year-old life coach left her marriage and moved to Greece alone, seeking a fresh start. She shares her journey of self-discovery and finding happiness in the unfamiliar.
With nothing but a suitcase full of clothes, she arrived in Athens, Greece, and faced her first challenge: finding a comfortable place to live. The initial Airbnb didn't meet her expectations, but she didn't let that stop her. She began exploring the neighborhoods on foot, clocking five or six miles a day. This daily routine helped her discover the city's hidden gems and eventually find a new home that suited her taste.
As a single woman in a big city, she thought it would be easier to make friends. And she was right. She met people through social connections and joined Facebook groups, where they would get together for drinks, meals, or even ravioli-making. She also hired a tutor to teach her Greek, which she found to be a complex but rewarding experience.
The biggest surprise for her was the simplicity of life in Greece. She developed an appreciation for the fresh food, reasonably priced and available at the local farmers market. She would swim in the ocean every morning, sit on her balcony surrounded by lemon trees, and drink an espresso. These moments were precious to her, and she felt grateful for the new life she had created for herself.
