Finding Hidden Pain in the Doctor’s Office
Thu Apr 30 2026
General doctors see many women each week, but a lot of violence in their homes stays hidden.
This study looked at how doctors spot signs that a woman may be suffering from partner abuse.
Researchers talked to 11 family physicians, including three men, across ten clinics.
They used made‑up stories to see how the doctors would react in real life.
Most doctors said they want to help and think it is important to notice abuse.
However, they do not all ask the same questions or do it at the same time.
Trust between patient and doctor is key, as are good relationships among doctors themselves.
Some doctors admitted that their own assumptions about a woman’s money or culture can stop them from asking.
This is a serious problem because it means some women are not getting help they need.
The study also found that many doctors do not follow official guidelines or set routines for checking abuse.
Without a clear plan, important clues can be missed.
The researchers suggest that doctors need more training and clearer procedures.
Support from the medical team would also help keep these conversations happening regularly.
