San Mateo, California, USA,Sun Nov 17 2024
In a surprising turn of events, San Mateo County health officials announced the first case of clade I mpox in California and the entire United States on Saturday. The patient contracted the virus while traveling in Eastern Africa, where an outbreak of this strain is currently happening. Up until now, the U. S. has been dealing with a different strain, known as clade II, since 2022.
The person infected is reported to have mild symptoms and is recovering at home. Health officials are taking precautions by tracing anyone who might have come into contact with the patient. They assured the public that the risk posed by clade I mpox is currently low.
