The latest horror flick, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, has made a big splash at the box office, raking in a cool $56. 6 million in its opening weekend. This is a huge deal, especially since it's the best opening ever for a movie released right after Thanksgiving. Critics weren't too kind to it, though, with only 13% liking it on Rotten Tomatoes. But hey, the audience didn't seem to care, giving it a B CinemaScore and sticking around to watch until the end.
This movie is part of a series based on a popular game about creepy animatronic animals. It's not as big as the first movie, which made $80 million, but it's still doing pretty well. In fact, it's the second-best horror opening of the year, right behind The Conjuring: Last Rites. It's also the highest-grossing PG-13 horror movie of the year so far and the best December horror opening ever.
Last year, the first Five Nights at Freddy's movie was a huge hit, making over $300 million worldwide. This sequel stars Josh Hutcherson again and is directed by Emma Tammi. It had a massive Friday, making $30. 1 million, including previews.
Other movies are also doing well. Disney's Zootopia 2 is in second place with $45 million, bringing its total to over $222 million. Universal's Wicked: For Good is in third, making $15. 6 million in its third weekend, but it's not doing as well as the first Wicked movie did at the same time.
There are a few other movies out there too. Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution is in fourth place with $10 million. And two Lionsgate movies, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair and Now You See Me: Now You Don't, are fighting it out for fifth place with around $4 million each. The Whole Bloody Affair is a special edition that combines the two Kill Bill movies and has a new anime sequence. It's over four hours long, but at least it has a 15-minute intermission.
