Windows 11 users, listen up! There's a big fix coming your way. A recent update caused a major problem with the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This is the tool that helps you fix your PC when it crashes or shows the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. But after the October 2025 update, the mouse and keyboard stopped working in WinRE. That's a huge issue because you can't use any recovery tools if you can't click or type.
Microsoft quickly released an emergency update, KB5070773, to fix this problem. This update is rolling out automatically for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It's called the "2025-10 Cumulative Update" and it's a must-have if you want your recovery tools to work again. The update might show up as optional at first, but it will install itself on October 20th. After the update, your Windows version will bump up to Build 26200. 6901 for 25H2 and 26100. 6901 for 24H2.
Now, you might be thinking, "Do I really need this update? " Well, if you're not planning to use the recovery tools, you might be okay skipping it. But if you want to be safe, it's better to install it. Plus, the November 2025 Patch Tuesday will also include this fix.
If you're having trouble installing the update, you can download it directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog. You don't need to worry about the SSU (Servicing Stack Update) if it's already installed on your PC.
Microsoft tested this update across different Windows 11 configurations and confirmed that it fixes the WinRE problem. They also mentioned that if you're stuck on WinRE and can't install the update, you can use a PS/2 keyboard or mouse if your PC has a PS/2 port. In the worst case, you can use a USB Recovery drive.
So, if you're a Windows 11 user, make sure to install this update. It's a lifesaver when things go wrong with your PC.
