Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the latest in the long-running flight simulation series, has hit major turbulence. The game relies heavily on cloud servers to offer a life-sized digital twin of Earth, which was meant to avoid the huge download size of its predecessor. However, on release day, these servers were overwhelmed by the high player count, causing hours-long wait times and glitchy performance.
The game's rating on Steam quickly plunged to "Overwhelmingly Negative. " While the developers have worked to fix the issues and boost server capacity, some players are still experiencing problems. Microsoft blamed the server crashes for missing content reported by some players.
Interestingly, the game was designed to stream most of its data to reduce storage requirements. The previous version, released in 2020, needed at least 200GB of storage and had huge updates and DLC. In contrast, Flight Simulator 2024 only needs 50GB of storage but requires high internet bandwidth. Early tests found that data usage could be as high as 81GB per hour, a number that the developers attributed to an unoptimized build with maximum visual settings.
Asobo, the game's developer, used machine learning and AI to generate more detailed landscapes. According to the CEO, this technology actually doubled the project's workforce to nearly 1, 000 people.
Microsoft acknowledged the launch issues and promised to keep working to improve the player experience. The game is available on various platforms, including Steam, the Microsoft Game Store, Xbox Series consoles, and Game Pass.
