Flooding Fears Confirmed: Annapolis' Aging Stormwater System Exposed

Downtown Annapolis business owners are breathing a sigh of relief after a recent pump replacement revealed the city's aging stormwater system is failing to protect the area from flooding. The city's flood mitigation project at City Dock aims to replace the aging stormwater system, which can no longer keep up with the increasingly frequent flooding downtown experiences today. The new system will include entirely new pumps capable of moving up to 10,000 gallons of water per minute, a dramatic increase from the existing pumps that only move about 100 gallons per minute.

The recent pump replacement was a result of a business owner's persistence in convincing the project's contractor to take a closer look. The owner of Storm Brothers Ice Cream says he was devastated by the flood damage his business suffered, and is relieved that the city is finally taking action to address the issue. The city officials say the pump was replaced as part of the ongoing project, not because it had failed, but the business owner's concerns have been validated.

The new stormwater system will better protect downtown businesses from both heavy rain and tidal flooding, and the city is working to complete the project as soon as possible.
