Florida, known for its sunny beaches and warm weather, experienced an unusual cold snap on New Year's Eve. Many cities, like West Palm Beach and Miami, had their coldest December 31st in over 20 years. This cold wave came after a month of warmer-than-usual temperatures, making the sudden chill even more noticeable. The cold air swept in from the Arctic, causing temperatures to drop significantly. In West Palm Beach, the wind chill felt like 37 degrees, while the actual temperature was 42 degrees. This was the coldest December 31st since 2000. Fort Lauderdale and Miami also saw their coldest New Year's Eve in over two decades, with temperatures in the mid-40s. The cold snap brought freeze warnings and cold weather advisories to many parts of Florida. Inland areas from Jacksonville to Deltona and along the Gulf Coast were under freeze warnings. Cold weather advisories were issued from Orlando to inland Collier County. The dry conditions also raised concerns about fire dangers, as much of Florida is experiencing drought.
Despite the cold, it wasn't severe enough to significantly impact invasive species like iguanas and pythons. The sunny skies provided enough warmth for these reptiles to recover. The cold air was driven by a strong low-pressure system that brought snow to the Northeast. However, it didn't quite meet the criteria for a "bomb cyclone, " which requires a rapid drop in pressure. Vacationers in Florida were surprised by the cold weather. Alaina Howard, an Ohio resident visiting South Florida, noted the contrast between the warm clothing of her Florida friends and her own shorts and T-shirt. In Panama City Beach, a local business saw an increase in bonfire reservations as people sought warmth on New Year's Eve. The chilly weather was expected to last through New Year's Day and into Friday. After that, temperatures were forecast to rise, with West Palm Beach reaching a high of 77 degrees by Saturday. This cold snap was a stark contrast to the warmer-than-average temperatures Florida had experienced throughout December.
