Flu cases are skyrocketing in Monroe County and nearby areas. Health experts are worried about a tough flu season ahead. Last week, there were 410 flu cases reported in Monroe County alone. That's a big jump from the week before. Hospitals are seeing more patients with flu and COVID-19. Strong Memorial Hospital had just six flu patients a week and a half ago. Now, they have 23. They also have 15 COVID-19 patients. New York state officials have declared flu to be widespread. This means health care workers who aren't vaccinated must wear masks around patients. Dr. Marielena Vélez de Brown, the county's public health commissioner, says this is the perfect time to get vaccinated. She stresses the importance of keeping up with all recommended vaccines, especially before holiday gatherings and travel. There's a new flu strain called H3N2 subclade K circulating. It started spreading after this year's flu vaccine was developed. This means the vaccine might not be as effective against this new strain. However, Dr. Vélez de Brown says the vaccine will still protect against other common flu strains and reduce the severity of illness. Even with the vaccine, there are other ways to stay safe. Good hygiene is key. Wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your face, and cover your coughs and sneezes. Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces, especially around high-risk individuals. Clean and sanitize surfaces you touch often. And if you're sick, stay home. Employers can help by offering paid sick leave so people don't feel pressured to work when they're ill.
