Football Playoff Predictions: ESPN Sees Shakeup in 12-Team Bracket
Sun Dec 08 2024
ESPN recently shared its latest predictions for the 12-team College Football Playoff, and there's been a significant reshuffling of the deck. With the regular season and conference championships wrapped up, the playoff picture is becoming clearer. The top four conference champions will enjoy byes, with the first round games happening on campus. Winners will advance to bowl games, culminating in the national championship in Atlanta on January 20.
Oregon, in its first year in the Big Ten, secured a perfect season by winning the conference title. With a 45-37 victory over Penn State, the Ducks are likely to snag the No. 1 seed. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for 283 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Jordan James added two more on the ground. Tez Johnson also had a standout performance, catching 11 passes for 181 yards and two scores.
Georgia faced a hiccup when starting quarterback Carson Beck got injured, but they managed to squeeze out a 22-19 overtime win against Texas. Despite their two losses, the Bulldogs are expected to climb to the second seed.
Boise State, with a 12-1 record after defeating UNLV 21-7 in the Mountain West title game, is looking at the third seed. Ashton Jeanty led the team to victory, and their only loss was to Oregon.
Arizona State also made a strong case for a top spot. With a dominant performance from Cam Skattebo, the Sun Devils punched their ticket to the playoffs. They're likely to jump into the top four and secure a bye.
Clemson clinched a playoff spot by winning the ACC Championship against SMU in an instant classic, 34-31. Their 56-yard field goal as time expired sealed the deal. They'll probably be one of the lower seeds in the top 12.
Penn State, after a close loss to Oregon, should still host a first-round playoff game. SMU and Texas are also in the mix, with SMU projected to stay above Clemson despite a drop in the rankings. Texas, on the other hand, fell four spots and will host SMU in an all-Texas matchup in the first round.
Indiana and Notre Dame maintained their spots, with both teams earning playoff tickets with 11-1 records. Ohio State gets a chance at redemption with a home playoff game against Tennessee. The winner could face Oregon in the quarterfinals.
Teams just outside the playoff include Alabama and Miami. Both missed out on conference championship games, with Miami's losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse hurting their chances.
