PFAS, or "forever chemicals, " are a big problem. They stick around in the environment and our bodies, causing serious health issues. These chemicals are in many products, like non-stick pans and waterproof clothes. They get into our water and stay there. More than 200 million Americans might be drinking water with these chemicals at levels that scientists say are unsafe. A study from the University of Arizona found something scary. Babies born near places with PFAS pollution have much higher chances of dying or being born too early. Mothers living downstream of these polluted sites had babies with 191% higher infant mortality rates. These babies also had 168% more extremely preterm births and 180% more low birth weights. This shows how bad PFAS can be for developing babies. PFAS can cause many health problems. They can mess up your thyroid, liver, and immune system. They can also cause hormonal issues and increase the risk of cancer. Even though we know these chemicals are dangerous, there are no national drinking water standards for them. The EPA's guidelines are way higher than what independent scientists recommend. Some states, like New Jersey, have set stricter limits, showing that the federal government is not doing enough to protect people. There are ways to remove PFAS from water, like activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis. But these methods are not being used widely because of political and economic barriers. While politicians debate, millions of people keep drinking contaminated water. This leads to more preventable health problems. People can take steps to protect themselves. They can use certified PFAS-removal filters and avoid products with these chemicals. But bigger changes are needed to fix this problem. The PFAS Action Act, passed by the House, would force the EPA to set enforceable limits and clean up contaminated sites. However, the Senate has blocked this progress, leaving communities vulnerable. PFAS contamination is a serious issue that needs urgent action. While the government is slow to act, individuals can take steps to reduce their exposure and protect their health.
