Former Brazilian Leader Moves Home After Hospital Stay

A former president of Brazil was released from a hospital on Friday and will now live at home under a special form of house arrest. He must stay there for at least three months, a decision made by the court because of his health. The former leader is 71 years old and has already been in prison for a long time, since November. He was jailed after he tried to start a coup when he lost the 2022 election to the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The Supreme Court gave him permission to stay at home for 90 days.After that, the court will look again and decide if he can stay in this arrangement longer. He had been in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Brasilia because he had a serious case of pneumonia. Doctors treated him with antibiotics and said his recovery was going as expected, without any complications. He has had many hospital visits in the past. In 2018, he was stabbed during a campaign event and needed surgery. He is scheduled for shoulder surgery in late April, which will take him back to the hospital.
