Former NIH Officer Charged Over COVID Record Missteps
Washington, DC, USATue Apr 28 2026
A grand jury in Maryland has brought charges against David Mor — a senior figure at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during the height of the pandemic. The case centers on alleged attempts to hide and alter federal records from April 2020 through December 2022, including data about COVID‑19 research grants.
The indictment, sealed on April 16 and later released, lists two co‑conspirators: a New York nonprofit that focuses on infectious diseases and a physician from an academic institution that received NIH funding.
Officials claim the trio deliberately suppressed alternative theories about how COVID‑19 began, by concealing information and falsifying documents. Five counts face Mor : conspiracy, destruction or alteration of records in a federal investigation, and concealment of documents.
This legal move follows a pattern of investigations tied to the virus’s origins that began during President Trump’s first term. While global health bodies point to natural spillover, U. S. intelligence agencies have suggested a lab leak is the more likely source.
The Senate’s Republican‑led panel continues to probe the pandemic’s beginnings, even requesting records from the medical journal The Lancet.
In related drama, former NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci has been accused by some Republicans of stifling lab‑leak theories, claims he has denied.
Mor was subpoenaed last year by a congressional subcommittee and had his emails, including those with Fauci, reviewed.
The outcome of these proceedings may influence how future public health records are handled and could reshape trust in scientific institutions.
