Police say the suspect entered the building without permission and stole merchandise.
The accused, whose name is Bryan William Casey, was taken into custody by state troopers outside the city.
During the arrest, officers discovered the stolen goods in his possession and returned them to the shop.
Casey left the police department on April 1, before the break‑in took place.
He gave a personal reason for his resignation, according to a police spokesperson.
The court has arraigned him on a charge that could lead to up to ten years in prison if convicted.
This case highlights how quickly a former law‑enforcement officer can become a suspect in a serious crime.
