Free Museum Fun: A Boost for BPS or a Missed Opportunity?

Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the continuation of BPS Sundays, a program offering free admission to six popular Boston museums and zoos for BPS students and their families. This extension, which will run through the end of the year, comes after a successful pilot program that saw over 36,000 students and families take advantage of the offer. But is this a win for all Boston kids, or are we missing a chance to be more inclusive? Imagine being a student at a charter school or a METCO program. You live in Boston, you love museums, but BPS Sundays don't apply to you. Doesn't that seem a bit unfair? Councilor Ed Flynn certainly thinks so, and he's not alone. Back in March, a resolution aimed at expanding the program to include these students failed to pass. So, why the exclusion?
