Freeing a Sea Lion from the Grip of Entanglement

Northern Vancouver Island, CanadaMon Sep 23 2024
A majestic sea lion, swimming through the waters of Northern Vancouver Island, its sleek body gliding effortlessly through the waves. But for one particular sea lion, its freedom was being suffocated by a life-threatening entanglement. A large packing strap had wrapped tightly around its neck, threatening to cut off its oxygen supply. The entanglement was first noticed in March, and a rescue mission was soon underway. Dr. Martin Haulena, executive director of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society, and his team took to the waters on September 21 to save the sea lion. Equipped with a drone, they tracked the sea lion to the rocky shores of Plumper Island, where they worked to free it from its deadly grip. Using a specialized technique developed by the rescue society, the team sedated the sea lion and carefully cut away the entangling strap. After a few minutes of gentle manipulation, the sea lion was finally free, its neck no longer constricted by the pack strap. With the entanglement gone, the sea lion was administered a second dose of medication to wake it up. And with a flick of its fin, it swam away, its freedom restored. The rescue effort was a collaborative effort, with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Marine Education and Research Society both lending a hand. For Dr. Haulena and his team, it was a triumphant moment, knowing that their specialized technique had saved yet another sea lion from a life-threatening situation.
