From Baseball to Football: The Unusual Journey of Bryce Boettcher
Eugene, Oregon, USASun Apr 26 2026
Bryce Boettcher has done something most athletes can only dream of. He got picked twice in major drafts, but not for the same sport. First, he was chosen by a Major League Baseball team. Then, years later, an NFL team called his name. This kind of double career isn’t common, and it shows how rare it is to excel in two different sports at a high level.
Boettcher played both baseball and football at the University of Oregon. Baseball came first when he joined on a scholarship in 2021. But he didn’t stop there. In 2022, he surprised many by walking onto the football team as a linebacker. Most players stick to one sport, but Boettcher balanced both. He spent three years playing in the outfield for baseball and starting at linebacker for football. By 2024, he had earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Defensive team in football while hitting 12 home runs in baseball.
A unique deal with his baseball team let him play one more football season before focusing fully on the NFL. At the NFL Combine, he made it clear where his priorities lay. Football, he said, is what excites him most right now. He wants to win a Super Bowl, something baseball can’t offer. "You can’t tackle someone in baseball, " he explained. It’s a bold choice, but it shows how athletes sometimes have to pick a path that feels right for them.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 232 pounds, Boettcher is built for football. His size and speed helped him stand out on the field. But his baseball skills were no joke either. Hitting . 276 with a . 372 on-base percentage and a . 500 slugging mark in 56 games isn’t easy. Still, he chose to leave baseball behind for now. It’s a reminder that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about knowing what drives you.
