From Cellmates to Lovers: A Musical Tale of Unlikely Friendship
Mon Jan 27 2025
Bill Condon's "Kiss of the Spider Woman" might not be perfect, but it sure is entertaining. The movie takes a Broadway musical, set in Argentina in the 1980s, and turns it into a film that's part drama, part fantasy, and all heart. The story follows two cellmates: Valentín, a political prisoner, and Luis, a gay window dresser. At first, they seem like an odd pair, but as Luis shares his love for old Hollywood musicals, they start to bond. This isn't just a story about friendship; it's also about finding hope in dark places. Jennifer Lopez steals the show as a glamorous actress in Luis's favorite film, and Diego Luna and Tonatiuh bring depth to their roles. The music is catchy, the dance numbers are lively, and the costumes are stunning. However, the back-and-forth between reality and fantasy can get a bit confusing. Still, this is a movie that'll make you laugh, cry, and maybe even sing along.
