Mario Cristobal's story starts with his grandfather, Mario Campos, who fled Cuba after being imprisoned by Fidel Castro's regime. Campos, a former police officer, started over in Florida with no English skills and faced discrimination. Yet, he taught himself the language, worked hard, and eventually founded a construction company. Campos' son, Luis Cristobal, also faced imprisonment and torture in Cuba before fleeing to Florida. He started a car battery business and worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Luis and his wife, Clara, instilled strong values in their sons, Mario and Lou, emphasizing hard work and respect. Mario, the younger son, followed in his brother's footsteps, excelling in academics and sports. He played football at the University of Miami, where he stood out for his discipline and work ethic. After his playing career, he transitioned into coaching, working his way up through various assistant roles.Mario's big break came when he was hired as the head coach at Florida International University (FIU). Despite inheriting a struggling program, he turned it around, leading the team to back-to-back bowl games.
