Almost two years ago, a Texan started hunting for a replacement for their aging 2010 Lexus RX350. The SUV was getting old, with 22 miles per gallon and nearing 200, 000 miles. The Toyota RAV4 Prime hybrid seemed perfect, but none were available at reasonable prices. After a frustrating search, the driver turned their attention to electric vehicles (EVs). They test-drove several models, including the Toyota BZ4X, Chevy Bolt, and Honda Prologue, but none compared to the Tesla Model Y. The Tesla offered better range, a superior charging network, and was more affordable. In late October, the driver ordered a Tesla Model Y for just under $38, 000, saving $2, 300 by retrieving it from Houston. The Tesla, nicknamed the "Hedonic Lexus, " is a digital marvel, a computer on wheels. It charges easily at home, offering significant cost savings. However, the buying process was a stark contrast to traditional dealerships, with Tesla offering a no-frills online experience. Insurance also proved challenging, with initial costs doubling due to a lack of a VIN. Despite these hiccups, the driver loves the Tesla's performance and smooth ride. Musk's politics don't factor into the driving experience, which is what truly matters.
