From Underdog to Hall of Fame: Joe Horn’s Unusual Path
Louisiana, Natchitoches, USAMon Jun 22 2026
Joe Horn grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he excelled at several sports.
He was not a top draft pick; the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL Draft.
At first, his career felt flat. He spent four seasons in Kansas City with little recognition and barely made a name for himself.
When the Saints signed him as an unrestricted free agent in 2000, Horn’s life changed.
He had saved only a few dollars and bought a Jerry Rice workout video from Blockbuster, studying the drills to improve.
That effort led him to create a highlight reel he sent out to NFL and CFL teams.
The CFL gave him his first real opportunity. He played for the Baltimore Stallions, Shreveport Pirates and Memphis Mad Dogs, racking up 71 catches for 1, 415 yards in 1995.
His performance earned him a Southern All-Star nod and caught the Chiefs’ attention.
Back in the NFL, Horn was versatile. He switched from defensive back to wide receiver during a preseason injury crisis in 1998, proving his value.
He finished that season with 35 catches for 586 yards and six touchdowns.
The Saints, then rebuilding after a 3‑13 season, saw what Horn could bring.
His speed and route running helped the team win 10 games in his first year, secure an NFC West title, and defeat the reigning Super Bowl champions St. Louis Rams in the playoffs.
Over seven seasons with New Orleans, Horn consistently posted strong numbers: over 80 catches and 1, 250 yards in four of his first five seasons.
He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004 while setting multiple franchise records.
His perseverance paid off when he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class, honoring a career that began in obscurity and ended with lasting legacy.
