G20 Summit: A Missed Opportunity for the US and Global Unity

Johannesburg, South AfricaSun Nov 23 2025
The G20 summit in Johannesburg wrapped up with a notable absence: the United States. This wasn't just any absence; it was the next president of the G20, the U. S. , skipping out on the event. President Donald Trump's administration decided to boycott the entire two-day event, which was supposed to bring together leaders from the world's richest and top developing economies. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa officially closed the summit by banging a gavel, a tradition where the gavel is usually handed over to the next president of the G20. But this time, there was no one from the U. S. to receive it. The U. S. had initially planned to send a low-level official from its embassy, but South Africa saw this as an insult and refused. In the end, no U. S. delegation was even accredited for the summit. The summit was also unusual because the leaders' declaration was issued on the opening day instead of the usual closing day. This declaration focused on issues like climate change and global wealth inequality, which the Trump administration had criticized. Despite opposition from the U. S. and Argentina, other G20 nations like China, Russia, France, Germany, the U. K. , Japan, and Canada backed the declaration. It called for more attention to issues affecting poor countries, such as financial help for climate-related disasters, easing debt levels, and supporting the transition to green energy. Ramaphosa praised South Africa's presidency for putting Africa and the Global South at the heart of the G20 agenda. However, some concrete proposals, like a new international panel on wealth inequality, didn't make it into the declaration. The G20, formed in 1999 to address global economic crises, has faced criticism for its effectiveness in solving major global issues like the Russia-Ukraine war and Middle East tensions. Despite these challenges, some saw the summit as a significant moment for the G20. It was the first time world leaders met on the African continent to discuss global inequality. Leaders from over 20 smaller nations were also invited as guests, highlighting the importance of addressing development priorities from an African perspective.

questions

If the G20 gavel was handed over to a golf club, would it still be considered a 'hole in one'?
Will the next G20 summit feature a 'fore'ign policy discussion on the golf course?
If the U.S. boycotted the summit, does that mean they also boycotted the South African braai (barbecue)?
