Gas Prices Take a Dip as Cooler Weather Moves In

Strait of HormuzTue Jun 02 2026
Monday brought a surprise drop in natural gas prices after they had just hit their highest level in two months. The sudden shift came when experts predicted cooler temperatures across the East Coast from June 6 to 10, even though much of the rest of the country will see warmer-than-usual conditions soon after. So why does weather matter so much? Gas demand usually rises when people crank up their heaters or air conditioners, so a cool forecast means less burning of the fuel. Behind the scenes, other big factors are still pushing prices around. The Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for Middle Eastern gas, remains blocked due to ongoing conflicts. That shutdown limits how much gas can get to Europe and Asia, leaving some buyers scrambling—and possibly turning to the US for extra supplies. Meanwhile, US gas production sits near all-time highs, with rig counts climbing to levels not seen in over two years. More gas on the market usually means lower prices, yet the export potential might keep things from falling too far.
Longer-term worries about gas supplies add an interesting twist. A major LNG export plant in Qatar took a serious hit in March when attacks damaged nearly one-fifth of its capacity. Repairs won’t wrap up for years, and since that single plant handles about one-fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas, the gap could push buyers toward US exports. Still, if US production keeps rising—as the Energy Information Administration now expects—prices might struggle to hold steady even with global shortages. On the flip side, electricity use in America climbed last month, which could support gas demand if power plants burn more of it. Gas storage levels also remain comfortably above average, showing that supplies aren’t tight yet despite the Middle East’s problems. Meanwhile, Europe’s reserves sit worryingly low, sitting 14 points below their usual levels. That mismatch could keep global buyers interested in US gas, depending on how prices play out.
