What if you could tell when a teen's post-concussion symptoms are normal and when they're not? That's what a recent study aimed to figure out. Researchers wanted to set a benchmark for the German version of the Postconcussion Symptom Inventory for teens aged 13-17 (PCSI-SR13). They asked 950 teens to fill out a questionnaire about symptoms they might experience after a head injury. Before setting these benchmarks, they checked if the questionnaire was reliable and made sense. They also compared how teens with head injuries (234 of them) answered to how regular teens did.
The good news? The questionnaire was trustworthy, with scores over 0. 97 for reliability. It also grouped symptoms into four categories: physical, emotional, cognitive, and fatigue. These groups made sense and were similar for both regular teens and those with head injuries. The injured teens reported more symptoms, which is expected. Now, doctors can use these benchmarks to compare scores and decide if symptoms are serious. This study was registered in the German Clinical Trials Register and the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ID DRKS00032854).
