A recent United Nations report has sparked controversy by claiming that Israel intentionally targeted Gaza's health care system during the 2021 war with Hamas. The report, released by the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry, says Israel’s actions amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Critics argue that Israel’s operations were necessary to protect its citizens from terrorist activities in Gaza. The report accuses Israel of deliberately killing, detaining, and torturing medical personnel, as well as targeting medical vehicles. This led to shortages of essential supplies like fuel, food, water, and medicines in Gaza. Israel's foreign ministry responded by saying the report is biased and ignores evidence of Hamas using medical facilities for military purposes. Hamas denies these claims. The report also found that both Israeli and Palestinian forces committed war crimes. It highlights the tragic story of 5-year-old Hind Rajab, whose family died in a car under Israeli shelling. Despite an ambulance arriving, Israeli security forces prevented access, leaving the bodies in the car for 12 days. The incident is one of many alleged attacks on health care in Gaza. The commission will present the report to the UN General Assembly on October 30. This isn’t the first time the commission has made such allegations; earlier in the conflict, they also accused both sides of war crimes.
