Gaze Tells Story in Rail Traffic Control

Simulation laboratory, unspecified countryFri Oct 23 2026

Rail traffic control is a serious job. Workers must guide trains. They must avoid crashes. They must stay calm. The work can be very hard. It can use a lot of focus. Safety is a top need. The mind must stay sharp. The job is safety critical.

Scientists wanted to learn more. They asked how the mind copes. They used eye tracking. They wanted real time data. They did not only use surveys. They looked at gaze. They looked at visual plans. They wanted to know what stress does. The goal was real time signs of strain.

The study had eighteen controllers. Nine were new. Nine were experienced. They wore head gear. They did four tasks. Traffic density changed. Task complexity changed. Gaze was measured. Subjective workload was checked. The team compared views and reports.

Results showed big shifts. Pupil size grew about one hundred percent. Stationary gaze entropy changed less. It moved about forty percent. Fixation rate had an experience link. New controllers used global views more. They used less planning data. Experts used other visual rules. Subjective reports agreed with demand. The team saw links with experience.
