Gene’s Bistro vs. Midway: A Brand Battle in the Sky

Gene & Georgetti, a family‑owned steakhouse that has been around for 85 years, started a new outlet called Gene’s Bistro at Chicago’s Midway Airport. The restaurant was supposed to run for 20 years under a contract with SSP America, the company that runs many airport food spots. In October, SSP ended the deal and told Gene & Georgetti they had to close within 90 days. Yet, the bistro stayed open for another seven months. Gene & Georgetti filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court, demanding more than $50, 000 and asking SSP to stop using their name and recipes. The family says the contract was broken because SSP lowered the upfront payment they promised, stopped paying a 5% monthly fee for over a year, and changed the menu away from the classic dishes that earned the family’s reputation. They also claim SSP wants to replace Gene’s Bistro with a Bally’s sports bar, which would benefit the casino company.SSP America replied that the lawsuit is “without merit” and said it will make decisions that benefit the airport, passengers, and partners. SSP has been running restaurants at Midway since 2017 after a $75 million upgrade that doubled food space. They now operate 24 spots, including famous Chicago names like Billy Goat Tavern and Home Run Inn. The lawsuit lists eleven claims, from trademark violations to fraud. Gene & Georgetti say they tried to talk with SSP many times, but the company didn’t listen. They feel the partnership is no longer helpful and that the bistro’s poor reviews hurt their brand. Bally’s Chicago, which will open a new casino and entertainment center in River West next year, wants to use the Midway space for its sports bar. The state allows Bally’s to place slot machines at airports, but it needs city and gaming board approval. Neither SSP nor Bally’s confirmed who will occupy the space. Gene & Georgetti hope that ending the use of their name at Midway will protect their legacy. They see this lawsuit as a last resort after failing to find a fair solution with SSP.
