Georgia's Judiciary Under Fire: Can Justice Prevail Amid Trump's Election Shenanigans?

In Georgia, where Ray Charles once lamented 'no peace I find', the fate of democracy hangs in the balance. A newly filed lawsuit by Georgia and national Democrats challenges an initiative from the State Election Board that allows for indefinite 'reasonable inquiries' prior to certifying election results—a move praised by former President Trump as a pit bull for his own political victories.
If pro-Trump officials can abuse this new rule to hold up Georgia's election without proper cause, it could spell disaster for democracy. After all, Trump has shown little love for the democratic process, having repeatedly endorsed dictatorships and still refusing to admit his 2020 loss despite losing every single one of his 60 lawsuits challenging the results.
Legally speaking, the case is a no-brainer. The board can't change laws passed by the legislature which clearly mandate election results be certified within a strict timeline. Any 'reasonable inquiries' must have judicially-imposed limits and can't supersede existing laws governing challenges to election integrity.
Yet, given Georgia's courts' track record in Trump-related cases (including one judge allowing Trump to turn his fraud case into an embarrassing circus by putting the prosecutor on trial), it remains to be seen if justice will prevail. Judges must rise above the political fray and set a strict schedule for proceedings, hearing key arguments within weeks rather than months.
