German Tech Giant and Indian Firm Join Forces for Green Tech

India is making big moves in the green tech world. A major German tech company, Infineon Technologies, has just joined forces with an Indian semiconductor firm, CDIL Semiconductors. This partnership is all about creating chips for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy systems. Why is this a big deal? Well, India has over 1. 4 billion people, but only a tiny fraction of vehicles on the road are electric. The country wants to change that, aiming to boost the EV market to 30% and increase non-fossil energy generation to 500GW by 2030. The plan is to produce MOSFETs and IGBTs, which are like the brains behind controlling electricity in devices. These chips will be made using materials like silicon carbide and gallium nitride, which are better at handling heat and packing more power into a smaller space. CDIL has been around for over 60 years and has been working on silicon carbide for four years. They've even exported it to other countries, including China. But for now, the focus is on meeting the needs of the Indian market. The partnership will see Infineon supplying wafers to CDIL for packaging and assembling at its Mohali facility in Punjab. The final products will target light EVs and renewable energy products. The facility can currently produce 600 million power semiconductor units per year, but CDIL is ready to scale up if needed. This isn't Infineon's first time in India; they already have a subsidiary there. But this is their first manufacturing partnership in the country. The goal is to tap into India's growing market for green tech. Infineon believes that India is still in the early stages of this market, but it's poised for significant growth in the next few years. The company plans to make more deals with local players to grow its presence in India. However, Infineon has no immediate plans to set up a wafer manufacturing site in the country. The partnership between Infineon and CDIL is a strategic move to boost India's green tech industry. It's not just about making chips; it's about creating a sustainable future. By focusing on domestic demand and using advanced materials, this partnership could pave the way for India to become a global leader in green tech.
