Germany's Finance Chief Heads to China for Tough Talks
Berlin, GermanySun Nov 16 2025
Germany's finance minister is off to China to talk about some big issues. Lars Klingbeil wants to chat about trade problems, like how China controls important materials and makes too much steel and electric car parts. He thinks talking directly to China is the best way to handle these problems.
This trip is happening because Germany is changing how it does business with China. They want to reduce risks after China limited exports of rare earths and computer chips, which hurt German companies. Klingbeil said Germany is okay with competition, but it needs to be fair.
Klingbeil is the first minister from Germany's new government to visit China. Another minister, Johann Wadephul, had to postpone his trip because China only agreed to one meeting. This shows that talks between Germany and China might be a bit tricky.
One of the big topics will be the war in Ukraine. Klingbeil said the war affects the economy and stability everywhere, not just in Europe. He believes China has a big role to play in ending the conflict.
This visit is important because it shows Germany is trying to balance its relationship with China. They want to work together but also protect their own interests. It will be interesting to see what comes out of these talks.
