Giants Make a Big Change: Daboll Out After Tough Start
A Disappointing End to a Three-Year Tenure
The New York Giants have made a significant change, parting ways with head coach Brian Daboll following a 2-8 start to the 2025 season. Daboll's overall record with the team stood at 20-40-1 over three seasons. Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator, will take over as the interim head coach.
A Promising Start Turned Sour
Daboll's journey with the Giants began with high hopes. Known for his offensive strategies, he even won the AP NFL Coach of the Year award in 2022. However, the subsequent seasons saw a decline. The team's offense struggled, ranking 30th and 31st in scoring in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Despite these challenges, the Giants gave Daboll another chance this offseason, hoping for a turnaround.
Quarterback Shuffle and Injuries
One of Daboll's key moves was replacing quarterback Daniel Jones with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. The plan was to use Wilson as a bridge to develop rookie Jaxson Dart. Initially, Dart showed promise with a win against the Chargers in Week 4. However, the team's performance was inconsistent, leading to a 2-8 record.
Dart's aggressive playing style endeared him to fans but also led to multiple injuries, including concussions. Despite these concerns, Daboll did not change his approach. This decision drew criticism, especially after Daboll was fined for entering the medical tent during a concussion check.
A New Chapter for the Giants
The Giants' ownership ultimately decided that enough was enough. Daboll's tenure ended, and the team will now look for a new full-time head coach. This marks the fifth search for a head coach since Tom Coughlin left in 2015. The Giants' record since then has been less than stellar, with a combined record of 53-104-1.
