Girls Track Teams Shine in Weekend Invitational Meets

A group of high school track teams from Illinois just wrapped up a busy weekend of competitions with some impressive results. Downers Grove North’s girls team took first place at Glenbard North’s invitational, beating Lockport by 47 points. Their athletes won multiple events: Gianna Modica ran the 800 in 2:22. 93, Maya Nicholson cleared 1. 52 meters in high jump, Blake Weltler leaped 5. 27 meters in long jump, and the 4x200 relay team finished in 1:45. 88. Other schools also had standout performances. Benet’s team secured third place with wins in the 1, 600, 3, 200, shot put, and 4x400 relay. Meanwhile, Huntley dominated a 21-team meet at Wheaton Warrenville South, while Timothy Christian and St. Francis competed in another invitational where Evergreen Park took the top spot. Timothy’s Kiara Holmes won both the 100 and 200 meters, while St. Francis’ Elena Mamminga claimed the 800-meter win.
On the boys’ side, Hinsdale Central edged out Downers Grove North in a tight meet, with multiple athletes setting strong times. Philip Cupial from Downers Grove North won the 1, 600 meters. Another meet saw Bloomington High take first place, with Glenbard East close behind. Timothy Christian’s team won its invitational with Chandler Brady sweeping the sprint hurdles and relay events. Baseball and softball teams also had big weekends. Lyons pulled off a comeback win against York, while Wheaton Warrenville South beat Wheaton North in a pitcher’s duel. In softball, IC Catholic Prep dominated Glenbard South, and Benet won a nail-biter against Fenwick. Lemont’s softball team had a high-scoring game, while Lake Park edged out Wheaton North in another close match.
