Giuliani in Hot Water: Fails to Follow Court Orders
Manhattan, New York City, USATue Jan 07 2025
Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, is in trouble again. This time, a judge found him in contempt of court. Why? Giuliani didn't follow orders to hand over information related to a $148 million defamation case. The case involves two Georgia election workers who say Giuliani falsely accused them of tampering with ballots in the 2020 presidential election.
The judge, Lewis J. Liman, said Giuliani ignored a clear deadline to provide evidence. This evidence is important because it could help decide if Giuliani can keep his Florida condo or if it must be given up to pay the judgment. Giuliani said he sometimes didn't turn over everything because he thought the requests were too broad or even traps. He also said he's dealing with many other court cases that make it hard for him to keep up.
The election workers' lawyers say Giuliani has been deliberately defying the court's orders. They say he's turned over some things, like a car and his New York apartment, but not the paperwork needed to sell them. He also hasn't handed over valuable items like watches, sports memorabilia, or any money from his bank accounts. Giuliani said he's looking into the disappearance of a Joe DiMaggio jersey.
The judge will decide later if Giuliani's actions were serious enough to affect the trial. Giuliani's lawyer warned that losing the Florida property before the trial could be like a civil "death penalty. " Giuliani insists the Florida condo is his main home and should be protected.
