You've probably heard that different countries have different impacts on the environment. But figuring out who's really to blame can be tough. Scientists looked at how people from 168 countries spend their money and found something surprising. Around half to nearly all of the planet's environmental issues can be traced back to the richest 20% of people, both in developed and developing countries. These folks spend the most and have the biggest impact.
If these high spenders changed their ways and started looking for low-impact options, we could reduce environmental pressure by up to half. Just focusing on food and services could help a lot. It could even bring some planetary boundaries, like changes to land and nature, back to safe levels.
So, if we want to keep our planet healthy, we need to focus on the biggest spenders. They might live anywhere, not just in rich countries. It's not about where you live, but how you spend.
