Big changes are coming to GM's factories. The Chevy Bolt EV, a budget-friendly electric car, will soon be gone. Its factory in Kansas will instead make a Buick SUV from China and a Chevrolet Equinox from Mexico. Why the switch? It's all about money and politics. Building cars in China and Mexico got more expensive. This is because of U. S. taxes on imports and the end of a federal electric car credit. This credit used to give buyers up to $7, 500 off. The Bolt EV's days are numbered. The last one will roll off the assembly line in about a year and a half. It's one of the cheapest new electric cars in the U. S. , priced at $29, 990.
GM has big plans for the Kansas factory. Starting in 2028, it will make the next Buick Envision. This is a compact SUV currently made in China. Before that, in mid-2027, the factory will start making the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox. This car is now made in Mexico. GM says the Bolt was always meant to be a short-term model. But what if it's a hit? Will GM change its mind and keep making it? Only time will tell. GM isn't giving up on electric cars. It plans to invest in the Kansas factory for future affordable EVs. But when that will happen is still a mystery.
