The U. S. Department of Justice is considering a major move against Google, asking a judge to force the tech giant to sell parts of its empire, including Chrome and Android. The goal? To level the playing field for competitors in the search engine market by opening up Google's tightly guarded data secrets.
"Google's been calling the shots for years," the government stated in court documents. "We need to stop Google from using its top products to keep its search dominance. "
Google's response? Vice President Lee-Anne Mulholland argued that the government's plan is too sweeping and could harm U. S. innovation and consumers.
In August, a judge ruled that Google is unfairly using its power to squash competition. Now, a trial to address this issue is scheduled for next spring, with a decision expected by August 2025. Google plans to appeal, but they'll have to wait for the judge's final decision.
