Google Meet to Hang Up on Android TV and Google TV Soon
HomeSat Sep 28 2024
Google Meet has been a convenient way for people to make video calls on their Android TV and Google TV since 2020. The app allows users to connect their webcam to their TV and participate in video calls on the big screen. However, it seems that Google is planning to shut down the app soon.
Code within the latest update to Google Meet for Android TV and Google TV spotted by Android Authority suggests that Google is preparing to shut down the app. The code mentions "depreciation" and states that users will no longer be able to use Google Meet on their Android TV to make calls. This notice is not live in the app yet, but its presence makes Google's intentions clear.
Google has already done the same thing on Samsung TVs, where Meet shut down in March. It's surprising to see the same happen on Google's own platform, especially since Google TV added support for "Call Notifications" just earlier this year, with Meet being the app that enables that.
For now, the app still works, but if you're using it, it would be wise to start looking for alternatives.
