Google Photos Lets You Switch Off AI Search: Here's How

Fri Jun 27 2025

Google Photos has introduced a new AI-powered search feature, but not everyone is a fan. Now, users have the option to turn it off if they prefer the traditional search method.

The "Ask Photos" Feature

The feature, called "Ask Photos," was first introduced in late 2024. It aimed to make finding photos easier by using AI to recognize people and events. However, it was initially slow and didn't work well, leading Google to pause it for improvements.

Enhanced and Revived

Google has now brought back the feature, making it faster and more efficient. When you search, it shows results quickly and then uses AI to find more related photos. However, if you prefer the old way, you can turn it off.

Customizable AI Features

Google Photos has always used AI to assist in searching, but now users can choose to turn off the newer AI features. This flexibility is beneficial as not everyone appreciates AI assistance in finding their photos.

To disable the AI search, ensure you have the latest version of Google Photos. Google is rolling out this option gradually, so you might not see it immediately. Once updated, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your profile picture.
  2. Tap on "Photos settings."
  3. Select "Preferences."
  4. Choose "Gemini features in Photos."
  5. Turn off the "Search with Ask Photos" option.

After turning it off, the "Ask" button at the bottom of the screen will revert to "Search," and you'll get the old search interface.

User Choice Matters

It's commendable that Google is giving users a choice. Some might prefer the new AI search, while others might stick with the old way. Ultimately, it's about what works best for you.
