Google is making big changes to its smart home system. Starting October 1st, a new AI called Gemini will replace Google Assistant on all Google smart speakers. Gemini is designed to be more conversational and understand natural language better. It can provide more detailed responses and handle complex requests. For example, it can suggest the best day for a barbecue based on the weather forecast. This upgrade will be available on all Google Nest smart speakers made in the last decade. That includes older models like the Google Home and Google Home Mini, as well as newer ones like the Nest Hub Max. However, some advanced features will only be available with a paid subscription called Google Home Premium. This subscription, starting at $10 a month, will give users access to Gemini Live, a more conversational AI mode. It also adds smart features to Nest cameras and video doorbells. Gemini can manage household tasks using natural language. You can ask it to turn off the lights, start the Roomba, close the blinds, and set the heat, all in one command. It can also handle exceptions, like turning off the ceiling lights but leaving the lamps on. But there are some limitations. You can't create new smart home routines by talking to Gemini on a speaker. This feature is available on Amazon's Alexa Plus, but Google plans to add it in the future. The Google Home app is also getting an upgrade with a new chatbot, new automation features, and a daily summary of household activity. However, Gemini Live won't display information on Nest displays or integrate with smart home devices. To use Gemini for Home, you'll need to opt in to Early Access in the Google Home app. The service is rolling out gradually, and you'll receive a notification when it's ready for you.
