Google's Smart Home Upgrade: What's New and What's Missing
Starting October 1st, Google's smart home system is undergoing a significant transformation. The tech giant is replacing Google Assistant with a new AI called Gemini on all Google smart speakers.
Enhanced Conversational Capabilities
Gemini is engineered to be more conversational and better at understanding natural language. It can provide detailed responses and manage complex requests. For instance, it can suggest the best day for a barbecue based on the weather forecast.
Compatibility and Features
This upgrade will be available on all Google Nest smart speakers made in the last decade, including:
- Older models: Google Home, Google Home Mini
- Newer models: Nest Hub Max
However, some advanced features will require a paid subscription called Google Home Premium, starting at $10 a month. This subscription includes:
- Gemini Live: A more conversational AI mode.
- Enhanced features for Nest cameras and video doorbells.
Managing Household Tasks
Gemini can manage household tasks using natural language. For example:
- Turn off the lights
- Start the Roomba
- Close the blinds
- Set the heat
It can also handle exceptions, such as turning off the ceiling lights but leaving the lamps on.
Limitations and Future Updates
There are some limitations:
- You cannot create new smart home routines by talking to Gemini on a speaker. This feature is available on Amazon's Alexa Plus, but Google plans to add it in the future.
The Google Home app is also getting an upgrade with:
- A new chatbot
- New automation features
- A daily summary of household activity
However, Gemini Live won't display information on Nest displays or integrate with smart home devices.
How to Access Gemini
To use Gemini for Home, you'll need to:
- Opt in to Early Access in the Google Home app.
- The service is rolling out gradually, and you'll receive a notification when it's ready for you.
