GOP Divided: Trump's Ukraine Strategy Sparks Internal Fury
Washington, USAThu Nov 27 2025
Republicans are in a bit of a mess. President Donald Trump's approach to Ukraine is causing a stir within his own party. Some Republicans are not happy with how the White House is handling a proposed peace plan for Ukraine. They think it's too friendly to Russia, which is a big deal because most Republicans usually stick with Trump's ideas.
The plan, which has 28 points, worries Ukraine supporters. They fear it might force Ukraine to accept terms that benefit Russia too much. Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican, said he's not sure this plan will bring real peace. He thinks it has some serious issues.
Things got worse when it was reported that Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, talked to a Russian official about working together on a ceasefire. Republican Representative Don Bacon was furious. He said Witkoff can't be trusted and should be fired. He even compared Witkoff to a Russian agent.
Even though most Republicans still support Trump, this criticism is notable. Trump has had some recent setbacks, like Democrats winning elections and Congress releasing files on Jeffrey Epstein, which Trump didn't want. Senator Mitch McConnell, a former Republican leader, suggested Trump might need new advisers. He said rewarding Russia's actions would be bad for America.
Trump's inner circle fought back. Vice President JD Vance and Donald Trump Jr. defended the plan and criticized McConnell. But analysts think this internal fight shows Trump is more politically vulnerable than he has been in a while.
With most Americans wanting to support Ukraine, Republicans might have to think about how this will affect the next elections. Some of the strongest criticism came from Republicans who aren't running for reelection, like Bacon and McConnell. They might be speaking up for others who feel the same but aren't saying it publicly.
