Government Extends Spy Powers for 45 Days

Washington DC, USASat May 02 2026
The Senate and the House have both approved a short‑term renewal of the U. S. government’s ability to conduct foreign surveillance without warrants, extending the program for 45 days. The Senate did so by unanimous consent, while the House passed its version with a 261‑to‑111 vote. After the extension is signed, it will go to the president for approval. This quick renewal follows a larger proposal that was rejected in the Senate. That package would have kept the surveillance authority for three years and also barred the Federal Reserve from creating a digital currency. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said that bill could not advance, and many House members who opposed it later removed their objections to the shorter extension. Senator Ron Wyden, a key opponent of the longer renewal in the Senate, announced that he has secured pledges from intelligence committee leaders to release a court opinion exposing how the program may have infringed on American rights. He warned that the Senate could face consequences if those documents are not made public.
Senator Tom Cotton cautioned that Wyden might face repercussions, even while he serves as committee chair. He suggested that the consequences could come while Cotton is still in power. Section 702, the law at the center of this debate, allows U. S. authorities to gather communications from foreign nationals abroad. When those foreigners communicate with Americans, the program often collects American messages as well, a practice known as incidental collection. The debate over surveillance powers highlights the tension between national security and privacy rights. Critics argue that the program can violate Americans’ constitutional protections, while supporters claim it is essential for preventing threats. The 45‑day extension keeps the status quo for now, but it also signals that Congress is still divided over how long to allow these surveillance activities and under what conditions.
