Grand Opening of Obama Center Lights Up Chicago

The new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago opened with a star‑filled ceremony that brought together former presidents, popular musicians and well‑known public figures. Barack Obama greeted the crowd from a stage that also hosted performances by Bono, John Legend, Christina Aguilera and others. During his remarks Obama highlighted the importance of democracy and urged everyone to act responsibly as citizens. The event made it clear that the center is a place for all people, not just one political side. He also reflected on his early days in Chicago, where he met his wife and started his political career. She urged listeners not to give in to cynicism amid today’s divisions and described the center as a calm space.Musicians performed songs that spoke to hope, freedom and unity. Jennifer Hudson sang the national anthem while John Legend joined rapper Common for a powerful rendition of “Glory. ” Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder also shared the stage, adding upbeat energy to the event. The ceremony was broadcast online and marked the beginning of a weekend of activities that will continue until the center opens to the public on Juneteenth. Attendees included possible future presidential candidates, civil‑rights leaders, Oprah Winfrey and comedian Stephen Colbert. International guests such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel also attended. Obama acknowledged that his presidency saw growing political polarization and expressed regret over it. He said some exhibits will address unfinished business, including his own mistakes. Tickets for general admission are already sold out through the end of October. The nearly 20‑acre campus is expected to welcome over a million visitors each year.
