Greek Shipping Chief Calls for Safety in Middle East Waters

Strait of HormuzTue Mar 03 2026
The Greek government’s top shipping official has warned that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz is “alarming. ” The area, which carries about one‑fifth of the world’s oil and gas traffic, has been shut for a fourth day. Reports say Iran may shoot at any vessel that tries to cross, raising fears for sailors worldwide. Greece owns one of the largest merchant fleets on the planet, and its ships are now trapped in the Gulf. At least ten Greek‑flagged vessels remain inside, with another five outside, and more than 300 ships linked to Greece are in the surrounding waters. The ministry has told all vessels to steer clear of the zone since Saturday, prioritising crew safety.
The shipping minister stressed that commerce depends on safe sea lanes and that sailors are not at fault for the conflict. He also mentioned plans to bring back Greek nationals stranded in the region, but air travel is blocked because of the closed skies. “We keep talking to our crews around the clock, ” he said, “and we’re concerned because danger could grow. ” The Greek government is monitoring the situation closely and has urged other nations to protect shipping lanes from military tensions.
