Green Cities: How Cleaning the Air Boosts Economic Growth in China
ChinaThu Nov 14 2024
One of the main goals of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals is to help cities grow while using resources wisely and reducing pollution. But achieving this balance is tough, especially for countries that are still developing. A recent study looked at how well 284 Chinese cities were doing with their green economy efforts from 2006 to 2020. It also checked how the "12th Five-Year Plan for Key Regional Air Pollution Prevention and Control" affected these efforts. This plan was like a big experiment to see if cleaning up the air helped cities grow in a sustainable way. The study found that overall, cities were doing better. But there were clear differences between different regions. Places that cleaned up their air, especially in the east, big cities, crowded cities, and cities not based on natural resources, saw the most improvement. The plan also encouraged cities to innovate more and organize their industries better. This study adds important information to what we already know about how controlling pollution can boost a city's green economy.
