In a recent statement, a top Danish military official clarified that there are no Chinese or Russian ships near Greenland. This statement comes after repeated claims by U. S. President Donald Trump suggesting otherwise. The head of Denmark's Joint Arctic Command, Major General Soren Andersen, made it clear that while there are Chinese and Russian vessels in the Arctic Ocean, none are near Greenland. The discussion about Greenland's security has been heating up. Trump has emphasized the importance of Greenland to U. S. security and has even hinted at the possibility of using force to take control of the island. In response, European nations have sent small groups of military personnel to Greenland at Denmark's request.
During a meeting on a Danish warship in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, Andersen invited the United States to join military exercises planned for the island this year. When asked if the U. S. would accept the invitation, Andersen remained uncertain. "I don't know that yet, " he said. Denmark's Joint Arctic Command is responsible for maintaining sovereignty and conducting surveillance, fisheries inspection, and search-and-rescue operations across Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The command uses patrol vessels, aircraft, helicopters, and satellite-based monitoring to carry out these tasks. Based in Nuuk, the command also operates Greenland's Sirius dog-sled patrol for long-range land operations and employs about 150 staff across various roles. In response to Trump's criticism that Denmark is not doing enough to defend Greenland, Copenhagen announced a significant investment last year. A 42 billion Danish crowns ($6. 54 billion) Arctic defense package was unveiled to bolster security in the region.
