At least 15 people in Minnesota have fallen ill due to E. coli bacteria linked to a recent recall of over 167, 000 pounds of ground beef by Wolverine Packing Co. The recall follows the discovery of multiple illnesses and a positive E. coli test result in a sample of the recalled meat. All reported cases are within Minnesota, and the U. S. Agriculture Department is continuing their investigation. The bacteria, E. coli O157:H7, is commonly found in the environment and can cause severe infections. Symptoms usually show up quickly, including fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe cases can lead to kidney damage, especially in young children, who require immediate medical attention. While the recall is a national measure, no cases outside of Minnesota have been reported. It's important for consumers to be aware of the potential risks and proper food handling practices to prevent further illnesses.
