Growth, Green or Both? EU Citizens Take a Stand

European UnionWed May 20 2026
A recent survey asked people in 13 European nations whether money matters or the planet comes first. The results showed that about six out of ten adults say growth is a must for a healthy society. Most of those supporters see growth as only moderate, not extreme. A smaller group – less than one in ten – question whether growth is a good idea at all. People from richer countries with smaller gaps between rich and poor tend to care less about growth. The study linked support for growth with values that aim at personal success and caring for others.
This means people think growth can help them personally while also helping society as a whole. However, how much people care about growth does not line up with how worried they are about climate change. Even those who love growth do not automatically back strict climate rules, and vice versa. The picture that emerges is more complex than the old “grow or green” debate. People can want both progress and protection, and their opinions are shaped by income levels and personal values. The findings suggest that policy makers should not assume growth lovers automatically oppose climate action.
