Hail Is Getting Bigger as the Planet Heats Up

United States, GuymonThu May 28 2026
Climate change is turning hail into a bigger, costlier threat. A new study shows that as the world warms, storms will produce more large hailstones—those bigger than a marble—and fewer smaller ones. By the end of this century, the frequency of large hail could rise between 38 % and 47 %, depending on how much greenhouse gas is released, while smaller hail events may shrink by 4 % to 8 %. Large hailstones are not just a nuisance; they can cause serious damage. When a single big stone punches a roof, it creates a hole that is difficult to repair and often leads to an expensive replacement. Bigger hail also falls faster, delivering more kinetic energy that can dent cars, break solar panels, and damage infrastructure. The study’s computer models explain this by showing that warmer air holds more moisture—about 4 % more per degree Fahrenheit—which fuels stronger updrafts and taller thunderstorms capable of producing larger hail.
Because a warmer atmosphere also reduces the amount of cold air aloft, smaller hailstones are more likely to melt before reaching the ground. That means regions that already experience a lot of hail—such as Argentina, parts of Europe, Canada and the U. S. Northern Plains—could see a sharp increase in damaging hail events, while some tropical areas might actually see fewer small hailstones. The economic impact is already huge: the United States alone loses roughly $10 billion a year to hail damage, and worldwide losses reach about $80 billion. Hail now costs more than many hurricanes, yet building codes rarely account for it. As more people and critical infrastructure move into hail-prone zones, the risk grows unless structures are designed to withstand larger stones. The research highlights that climate change is not only about rising temperatures; it also reshapes the weather we experience daily. Larger, more destructive hail is a new frontier in understanding how global warming can affect our everyday lives and economies.
